About Us

The Wellington Pride Parade Trust was established in August 2023 to celebrate the Rainbow and Takatāpui communities of Te Whanganui-ā-Tara. Our mission is to be community-led, ensuring that every voice is heard. Together, we can create events that truly reflect and uplift the people they are meant to celebrate.

Wellington Pride Festival

The Wellington Pride Parade is a standout feature of the Wellington Pride Festival, which has its roots in the 1986 campaign for Homosexual Law Reform. It all started with the Newtown Lesbian and Gay Fair, themed ‘A Fair for a Fair Law.’ Since then, the festival has evolved and expanded, growing each year to celebrate our vibrant rainbow whānau in Te Whanganui-ā-Tara.

Connecting with mana whenua

We acknowledge that our events take place on the land of Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika. We are committed to upholding relationship with mana whenua and ensuring Māori and Takatāpui peope are celebrated. The iwi that make up Taranaki Whānui migrated to the Wellington area in the 1830s and have maintained ahi kā. Taranaki Whānui are those people who descend from one or more of the recognised tīpuna of Te Ati Awa, Taranaki, Ngati Ruanui, Ngati Tama, Ngati Mutunga and other iwi from the Taranaki area.

Listening to our communities

Connecting with our communities and celebrating our vibrant people is at the heart of what we do. Throughout the year, we host a series of community hui and work closely with Wellington’s Rainbow organisations to ensure our event reflects the diversity and culture of our community. We’d love to hear any ideas or suggestions you might have to help us make this event even more special.
